N°83 GDRNNú Ninja Helga Mjöll
GDRN is an Icelandic musician and actress. Her full name is Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð Jóhannesdóttir and she was born in Reykjavík in 1996. Yesterday she had her 26th birthday (born 8 January 1996). Congratulations Guðrún!
GDRN plays the main character in the Netflix series Katla (2021), which has had a successful run in Spanish Netflix, as well as in many other countries. It is a mystery-drama television series created by Baltasar Kormákur and Sigurjón Kjartansson about life in a small town located in a Volcanic area in Iceland. Suddenly mystical things start happening. The show is very aesthetically pleasing, with a lot of black sand and ash, and of course the plot is also good!
GDRN grew up in Mosfellsbær, a suburb town of Reykjavík and started playing football at an early age. She played until well into her teenage years and was a very promising player. Her career ended in 2014 after a series of injuries.
Alongside football, GDRN was studying classical violin and later jazz piano and singing. After graduating junior college, she began to focus on her music and in 2018 her first album “Hvað ef” comes out. It was well received, and she got her first hit song from that album “Lætur mig fá“. That same year she won four awards at the Icelandic Music Awards, including for pop singer of the year, best pop song, best pop album and music video of the year. She was also nominated for the 2018 Nordic Music Prize.
Her musical style is jazz-influenced pop with a dash of R&B, and she writes her own lyrics and co-produces her music. Her second and newest album came out in 2020 and is simply called GDRN. It was received very well even though GDRN was not able to follow up on the album with as many concerts as she wanted to because of Covid restrictions.
It seems like GDRN is signing in as one of Iceland’s top contemporary musicians and actresses. It will be interesting to see what this talented artist does next.
