Nº1 The SugarcubesHelga Mjöll Oddsdóttir
Every Sunday we will put art in the spotlight. We will post about some Nordic artist or a cultural phenomenon.
First up is the legendary Icelandic post-punk group The Sugarcubes. Their lead singer was no other than the Nordic-Queen-B herself, Björk. The band was active from 1986 to 1992 and published 3 studio albums. Early on they got signed by record labels in the US and the UK and were gaining popularity all over. By the time they published their last album, Stick around for joy (1992) Björk had already decided to go solo. Funny enough, their farewell album spawned the band’s biggest international hit single, Hit (appropriate title) and gave them the opportunity to go on tour with U2 as their opening act.
If you are not familiar with their music, I recommend you check them out. I think their music is fabulous and timeless!
