Ragnar Kjartansson is an Icelandic multi-disciplined artist. His creations are thought-provoking, humorous, and deeply influenced by tragicomedy. He frequently uses installations, paintings, performances, videos, and music as mediums. In his early years, he was much into music and was in a number of bands, most notably as the frontman of the Icelandic band Trabant, where his raw and flamboyant live performances became the band’s trademark.
Around the year 2000, Ragnar turned to his multi-discipline artistry and since then he has become a promising talent in the international art scene and has had solo shows in prestigious museums, art festivals, and galleries around the world.
In his video installations, Ragnar works a lot around the concept of repetitions. In 2019, the Met in New York premiered a seven-channel video installation, called Death is Elsewhere, in which a single song is performed without beginning or end in a nearly continuous loop.
Another memorable work by Ragnar is a video series called “Me and my mother”, in which he and his mother stand facing the camera while she spits continuously on him. The mother and son duo produce a new video for this series every 5 years and have done so since the year 2000.
